'7 Billion Needles' is a sci-fi horror that explores themes of humanity, life, and connection. The story centers around Hikaru, a young girl that recently transferred to a new school after the death of her parents. Hkaru struggles to connect with others seemingly as a result of some past trauma that is only alluded to in the first volume. After a meteor strike kills her on a class trip a sort of alien symbiote fuses with her and revives her. Now back at school the symbiote known as "Horizon" tells her that in order to save humanity she must find and eliminate "Maelstrom"; an alien lifeform that, similar to Horizon, has found a host to carry out its bidding, this being eliminating all life on the planet. For the sake of humanity Hikaru must locate and take out Maelstrom before it can spread across the globe. From here, Hikaru must bridge the gap and find a way to connect with her peers for the sake of the planet.
Initially the story reminded a lot of 'Parasyte' with the whole alien parasite concept but ‘7 Billion Needles' is definitely worth the read. The characters and core concepts aren't anything crazy but they form a very compelling story and really keep you invested.
Quality: I'd say a solid 7/10 it was a quick entertaining read that made me excited to continue with the story. Overall well-written
Enjoyment: 6/10: a fun read, I'm not the biggest sci-fi fan but I thoroughly enjoyed it
Questionable material: 0/10 One thing I appreciated about this book is a complete lack of fan-service and problematic material, it does have a bit of blood and minor gore but I don't consider that a problem
Art: 6/10 I like it, its got a nice classic look nothing super standout but visually appealing and nothing that distracts from the story
Characters: 6/10 simple but effective I do quite like the main character she feels very realistic
Story: 7/10 solid
Overall I'd say 7 Billion Needles is worth a read (at least volume one) with what I've read so far I'd say it's an entertaining manga with a good story. Maybe not award-winning but worth trying out
